English to Arabic translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Government / Politics / social policy
English term or phrase:sex industry
The IOM glossary calls it سوق الجنس but I don't find the term appropriate. I am thinking of maybe, قطاع الخدمات الجنسية because this is an organised industry in Australia and not just a "marketplace". Any other suggestions? I have to be very politically correct about this.
i can see your point, sam :) - however, sexual services is not a government thing, and is limited to the pleasure part. 'sexual services' is included in the term 'sex industry', but cannot used as its equivalent.
Now you are beginning to get the context Ala :-) Your's is correct as a generalist term, but not in the context of my

policy, which deals with the "girls pleasing the patrons" and ensures that they are screened for medical nasties which they might spread to the "patrons", that the Madam is licensed to manage the "girls" and that if they do it on "work from home basis" there are no underage children wandering into the "office" when "business" is being done.
Now, can we change the subject?
now it comes to me, was not 'خدمات جنسية' (sexual services) a term in the pornographic literature denoting performing sexual activities, e.g. oral sex, in orer to please patrons?
- legalized prostitution. Further down, there are even "work from home" schemes that are regulated by the council. And this is why the term "الخدمات الجنسية" seems more appropriate to me than "صناعة الجنس", although the second is the more common.
I don't know if it's just me, but when I hear "الخدمات الجنسية", I immediately think of prostitution and that kind of "services"!

قطاع الصناعات الجنسية /قطاع صناعة الخدمات الجنسية
Explanation: the first قطاع الصناعات الجنسية seems less offensive as الجنسية has a pun dual meaning lightens the effect الجنسية as in nationality

Explanation: إباحي in Arabic would express sex politely. I'd go for السوق الإباحي more than قطاع الخدمات ... the term قطاع الخدمات may sound too ... I don't know .. considering the content!

BTW ... إباحي may sound insulting to the western audience as it reflects a negative meaning, but it doesn't to an Arabic audience after all.

Asker: Welcome to the West, Dina. إباحي in English is "explicit" and sex does not have to be "explicit" at all - besides, politness is not what I am after. I need a non-offensive term that would equate the sex workers with office workers, and any other profession at the same level of theoretical respectfulness.
Explanation: Euphemism is simply a betrayal to the source here.
Also please note that 'industry' does not only refer to 'services', but an umbrella term for all the aspects of controlling, organizing, supervising, production, etc.

Asker: To me the term صناعة denotes "manufacturing". I know we "produce" sexual implements, but we are not talking about this here - what is being addressed by the policy are brothels.
