I'll try to keep the question open for a bit longer (I think it will only close by itself in a week or so), in case someone has a brighter idea. I may not be able to use the suggestion in my translation, but it may be of use to someone else.

I'm being asked to close the question, although I admit I'm still a bit confused. For one thing, as I noted above, "gateway" has several meanings, and the one I'm enquiring about here is in the sense of "simple web page with links to other pages", not "A device that converts one protocol or format to another" (as in the suggestions of Shazly/c4arab glossary, Ghada/Microsoft glossary and Hamzeh/ebm glossary). That's not to say that the word "معبر" wouldn't work here, but it makes me hesitate a bit.
Also, I don't know why most of you discarded the word بوابة, even though it is the most established and recognised term - even if it is misleadingly used for both English terms, I think we should keep it for at least one of them.
So although I'm still not sure, I'm going to go for بوابة for portal and معبر for gateway.

I think there's some confusion regarding the translation of the term "gateway" because the word is used in several senses.
I realised that when I read Shazly's glossary definition and Ghada's Microsoft glossary term. I looked up the term "gateway" and found that it is mainly used in the sense of "A device that converts one protocol or format to another" or "A device that acts as a go-between two or more networks that use the same protocols." which is obviously not the sense I'm referring to in my question.
