English term or phrase:Hedge Clause
A disclaimer used in market letters, research reports, or other printed materials relating to the evaluation of investments. Its intent is to exonerate the writer from responsibility for the information's accuracyز
I would like to know what 'hedge" exactly mean. It has been previously posted
Explanation: A hedge clause is a caveat emptor. It says in essence, "In preparing this material, I have tried to provide true and accurate information to the best of my ability, but I am human, and there could be errors that I could not detect. Even if the information is entirely accurate, the use of this information for investment purposes requires skill and experience and involves risk, even when handled by the most experienced money managers. I cannot in all fairness be held responsible for damage resulting from the use or misuse of this information. Use extreme caution. It is your money."
The American Heritage Dictionary lists six different definitions for the noun "hedge." The definitions that are relevant to this usage are:
1. A means of protection or defense
2. An intentionally noncommittal or ambiguous statement.
3. A word or phrase, such as "possibly" or "I think," that mitigates or weakens the certainty of a statement
The definition that is relevant to "hedge" as an investment transaction is the following:
"A securities transaction that reduces the risk on an existing investment position."
As you can see, the two meanings are related, albeit different.
