يقصد بهذا المصطلح حسبما يذكر الفاروقي في قاموسه القانوني: ما ينشده المدعي في دعواه أو تظلمه من إنصاف أو فائدة على يد المحكمة، وكلمة relief تعني الإعانة أو طلب كشف الظلم أو الإنقاذ مما يحل بالفرد من ظلم أو باطل.
وكلمة Interlocutory في القانون تعني عاجل أو تمهيدي، وبالطبع في هذا السياق تعني عاجل.
