English term or phrase: don't need
A non-native speaker of Arabic, who teaches Arabic as a professor in an university. He translated this sentence " I don't need your help" into Arabic as
أحتاج عن مساعدتك
He claimed that while" I need" = أحتاج إلى
but when the preposition " إلي " is changed to "عن", the meaning of the phrase will change to " I don't need"
, in other words, أحتاج عن means " I don't need".

personally, I have no clue why he claimed that, and I don't think his use and interpretation of "أحتاج عن" is correct.
But since he teaches Arabic as a professor, I guess he might have come up with that usage from somewhere. That is why I posted this question to see if you, as native speakers of Arabic, have heard or read sth like this somewhere before? Is it an outdated usage? or something else? or just a misinterpretation out of his own understanding.

thanking you in advance.

لا أحتاج/ لا حاجة لي في
Explanation:
An example of the usage of عن as mentioned by that professor is:
راغب في which means 'to want' or 'to desire' and راغب عن which means to be 'disinterested in'
Also, ذهب إلى which means 'to go to' and ذهب عن which means 'to leave' or 'to depart from'
Given these two examples and the fact that أحتاج عن cannot be quoted as used as to mean 'I don't need' (or to mean just anything), the preposition عن can actually give a similar sense but when the verb it is used with indicates some kind of motion which is not the case with أحتاج ... A further example is رحل إلى and رحل عن
So, أحتاج عن is incorrect
