A great poem, in a sense, has to be a great thinker.

الشاعر العظيم ، إلى حد ما، لا بد أن يكون مفكرا عظيما

how do you translate " in a sense" in this context?

what I can think of is " إلى حد ما ", any other options?

“in a sense” has two meanings:
1) to a limited extent or degree
2) in one aspect; in some ways but not others; according to one explanation or view

In the current context, I think it means “in one aspect”. So I agree with Baligh’s suggestion and I also suggest: "من وجهة نظرٍ ما" or “من ناحية ما”

Not all expressions have their equivalent, so we have to look for the general meaning and try to express it in our own language. It doesn't have to be literal, it would make for poor style. The reader wants to understand, and to understand without making great efforts.

و لكن...اذا قلت " الشاعر العظيم..على وجه ما...لا بد أن يكون مفكرا عظيما"...هل هذه تعطي معنى مطابقا للنص المصدر؟ و هل هذه العبارة مستساغة لاذن العرب
