English term or phrase: categorical
I am looking for an Arabic translation of the word 'categorical' as used in speech perception. This means that although the stimuli we perceive, such as a speech stream, exists along a continuum, but when we perceive it we only perceive it as belonging to one category or another.

An example sentence would be: "Although we perceive non speech sounds continuously, perception of speech is categorical such that a large difference between one sound and another may not be perceived if they are still put in the same category, whereas a small change may be easily perceived if it causes a shift in category assignment.

The best translation I can think of would be قولبي such that categorical perception would be إدراك قولبي.

Thanks all,
Kevin
