Explanation: over the air broadcasts
This term should be read like this: over / the air broadcasts

عبر البث الهوائي استخدام الهوائي

So the sentence also can be put it this way:
in few years, all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian via the air broadcasts using an antenna.
in few years, all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian through the air broadcasts using an antenna.

According to the link shown below, the sentence should be
After August 31, 2011, all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna. http://www.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/oca-bc.nsf/en/h_ca02319e.html
according to that, the term “ over-the-air broadcasts” is a whole term,I altered my suggestion of the translation as :
Both analog and digital broadcasting are sending the signals over the air. In this sense, the in the sentence is not used for distinguishing the difference between analog and digital broadcasting, it is used to distinguish only between cable/wire broadcasting and over-the-air broadcasting.
Please refer to the following:
The final leg of broadcast distribution is how the signal gets to the listener or viewer. It may come over the air as with a radio station or TV station to an antenna and receiver, or may come through cable TV [1] or cable radio (or "wireless cable") via the station or directly from a network. The Internet may also bring either radio or TV to the recipient, especially with multicasting allowing the signal and bandwidth to be shared. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcasting
conclusion: “over-the-air” used here is not a term to distinguish the difference between digital and analog broadcasting, my altered translation will be:
البث على الهواء
all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over the air broadcasts using an antenna.
Analog television التلفاز التناظري
Digital television التلفاز الرقمي
Converter box الصندوق المحول
all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna.
كل التلفاز التناظري سوف يحتاج إلى الصندوق المحول لأجل استقبال البث الكندي على الهواء استخدام الهوائي

البث على الهواء --- هنا ليس لتمييز الفرق بين البث الرقمي و البث التناظري...بل كلهما الثب على الهواء....بل يذكر هنا لتمييز البث على الهواء من أي البث غيره مثلا البث عبر الكوابل

sorry, the translation of the whole sentence should be
all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna.

To Yasser El Helw: regarding your suggestion, I thought over it, and finially, I think we should use " al-bath ala al-hawa'i" in stead of " al-bathi al-hawi'yiu".... because at the end of that sentence, it distinguish such "over-the-air" from any other form of "over-the-air" by the words " using an antena"... it is used here to confine the meaning of "over-the-air", which is not only "through the air" but also "using an antena", giving the meanings of " البث الهوائي ", so if we use "البث الهوائي " here, the phrase "using an antena" will become repeated/or superfluous.
In short:
over-the-air broadcasts = البث على الهواء
over-the-air broadcasts using an antena=
البث على الهواء استخدام الهوائي
or
البث الهوائي
************
Final decision:
البث على الهواء
all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna.
كل التلفزينات التناظرية سوف تحتاج إلى الصندوق المحول لأجل استقبال البث الكندي على الهواء استخدام الهوائي

To all: thanks so much for your contribution to this discussion, and I learned a lot through it, and please accept my thanks to you all and I hope I can learn more from you, my respectful(deserving respect) al-hlu al-lughah. My final suggestion in regard to the translation of the term “ over-the-air broadcasts” is البث على الهواء
“ over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna” is
البث على الهواء استخدام الهوائي
Or البث الهوائي
Basing on the structure of the sentence, where the phrase “using an antenna” and “ over-the-air broadcasts” are mentioned respectively. To keep this structure of the sentence and its meaning at the same time, I decided to use “ البث على الهواء استخدام الهوائي”
In stead of “البث الهوائي” in the translation of the sentence.
Hi, I found that article containing your sentence, in which the hyphen is used to linked them up as I thought.http://www.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/oca-bc.nsf/en/h_ca02319e.html
the original text confirm that we should use the hyphen in the phrase.THnaks!
To asker: would you please confirm if Canadian is the name for that TV channel or station, In the context of the stuff you are working on, does it refer to a channel, if no, it would be an adjective here. My suggestion might need to be altered accordingly, thanks!
Canadian here is an adjective quantifying the broadcasts 'over the air' is a way of referring to what we also call 'terrestrial' ie non satellite TV it would not necessarily have hyphens in but should be considered as a whole
To Shazly: I know we are talking about digital broadcasts. Have you read my above note, I mentioned that already. The point here is, how we read that sentence grammatically correct. You can interpret it in your way, if the "over the air" is considered as a whole, however, to interpret that way, these three words should be linked as whole using the hyphen between them to make it an adjective.
How do you read this sentence? “all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over the air broadcasts using an antenna.”
Do you think “ Canadian” and “ over the air ( as a whole)” these two terms are modifying the word “broadcasts”? From Shazly’s suggestion, I can tell the sentence was interpreted this way. Over-the-air was considered as a whole to modify “broadcasts”. If this is the case, between the three words “over”, “the”, “air”. There should be a hyphen to join them up, as this “ over-the-air” using as an adjective. However, as you can see in the sentence, it is not that case.
Canadian ---here is a noun, referring to the TV station or channel. I guess in few years, Canadian will change its broadcasting format from analog to digital, then all analog televisions need an additional device which is that “converter box (converting the digital signals to analog ones so that the analog TV can display broadcasting on the TV screen), and both analog and digital broadcasts they are “air broadcasts”. The term “over” here, indicates that the means of the television picking up the signals are via/through “the air broadcasts using an antenna”.
“Canadian” is a noun; it is the object of the word “receive”, not an objective for “broadcasts”.
“Over” is a preposition, means “through”/”via”. Not part of “ over the air (as a whole term)”.
Thanks!
