المعنى الأًصلي للتعبير يشير إلى الحيوانات التي تقع في قاع السلسلة الغذائية فهي تتغذى على بقايا طعام وفضلات الآخرين دون أن تبذل جهداً في الحصول على هذا الطعام، وهذا هو المقصود، الشخص وضيع الشأن الذي لا يستطيع أن يفعل شيئاً لنفسه ويقتات على حساب الآخرين ويستفيد منهم ومن الأشياء الحقيرة (أي شيء يماثل القمامة والفضلات من حيث الوضاعة).

من حيث الترجمة، أرى أن "وضيع" تفي بالغرض: لن أضيع وقتي مع شخص وضيع مثلك.
