اعادة ضخ النفط الفائض الى حقول النفط مما ادت الى زيادة لزوجة النفط التي قد تؤدي الى صعوبة استخراج النفط في المستقبل.

عام 1927 حدث تدفق تلقائي عظيم للنفط في منطقة بابا كركر بالقرب من مدينة كركوك مما حدى بشركة النفط العراقية لاستخراج النفط بصورة منظمة من حقل بابا كركر في سنة1934 علما ان استخراج النفط كانت تتم قبل هذا التاريخ بطرق بدائية. يقدر كمية المخزون الاحطياطي لحقول النفط في كركوك باكثر من 10 مليار برميل بقدرة انتاجية قدرها750 ألف برميل الى مليون برميل يوميا. يعتقد بعض الخبراء في مجال النفط ان الاساليب السيئة التي كانت تتبع لاستخراج النفط ابان حكم الرئيس العراقي السابق صدام حسين في ضل سنوات الحصار ادت الى اضرار قد تكون دائمية في حقول النفط في كركوك. احد هذه الاساليب كانت اعادة ضخ النفط الفائض الى حقول النفط مما ادت الى زيادة لزوجة النفط التي قد تؤدي الى صعوبة استخراج النفط في المستقبل.

Other problems include refinery residue and gas-stripped oil. Fuel oil reinjection has increased oil viscosity at Kirkuk making it more difficult and expensive to get the oil out of the ground
