English term or phrase: begrimed
Dear all,
I am translating a short story from English into Arabic, and I have encountered this word 'begrmied', which I could not look up, neither in Oxford nor in Cambridge. Can anyone please look up this word?

The full sentence is: "...he was hatless and his face and clothing were begrimed."
Please, do not translate the sentence, or else I will be in troubles.

Many thanks,
Nawal.
