I don't agree that بدين is less than polite, or that ممتليء has necessarily a positive connotation. They are just descriptive words and both are suitable for this context.

Also, the word ممتلئ in our culture has a very positive meaning, which is perfection of body. Consider ممتلئ القوام and ممتلئة الخدود .

Yeah, indeed. I opt to choose a descriptive equivalent, since the tone of the story is melancholic, so I think that the word بدين or سمين do not fit at all.

but if their tone is polite, mitigated or even neutral, in this case you have to choose a polite word.
