Affirmation is what we get when somebody positively asserts our good qualities, the attributes that give us a sense of human worth and contribute to a healthy self-image. Without affirmation, our self-image would suffer, and our good qualities could be gradually extinguished, which would contribute to further loss of our sense of worth, in a downward spiral. That is why it is so important to praise and reward children, even for the least positive thing they do.

This sense is expressed in all the person\'s self-actualizing activities. A young person may go through different phases, experimenting with a number of media for self expression, writing poetry, lifting weights, learning a new language, even engaging in political action, etc. In all of these expressions, the person is saying: I am what I do and what I make. Therefore, I must be good at something:
قيمة كل امرئ ما يحسـنه
This sense of self-worth is impressionable. It attains healthy robustness when affirmed from without, especially by people whom we value and who represent role models: parents, teachers, community leaders, peers. Without steady affirmation, one\'s self-image gradually loses its sheen, and the drive to creativity loses its momentum.
