English to Bengali translations [Non-PRO]
Other | | English term or phrase: about | | as i understood there are about 5 words to express the meaning "about" (like "to ask about something") - bishoye, kotha, shomporke, sombondhe and proti. like "kichhur bishoye prosno kora", "kichhur kotha prosno kora" etc. so i don't understand what's the difference in using this or that postposition in the meaning "to ask about something", "to talk about something". which one is better to use? what is good for colloquial language? in there any shidows of the meaning "about" of those postpositions? or all means absolutely same and can be used in the mentioned above example equally? |

Generally, "About" is represented in Bengali by "Bishoye" and "Somporke/Sombondhe".
ami tar somporke/sombondhe/bishoye bolchhi= I am talking about him
E bishoye ami kichu bolbo na= I will not say anything about this matter
In few cases, "Kotha" is used for "about".
ami tar kotha bolchhi= I am talking about him (however it is colloquial form of "ami tar somporke bolchhi")
Generally "Proti" represents "to","against".
tar proti amar kono abhijog nei = I have no complain against him.

The matter is complicated.
Actually "bishoye" is the word which is used most colloquially and easily understandable.
If you want to say: I want to talk about him, you should write "ami tar kotha bolte chai." OR "ami tar bishoye bolte chai"
But if you want to say: I want to talk regarding him, you should write "ami tar somporke/sombondhe bolte chai ".
