Why Sailors Wear Bell Bottoms
The flared leg allows bell-bottoms to fit over boots easily.
They protect the boots from getting spray and rain in them. They
also make the boots easier to remove. They're easily rolled up,
while scrubbing the deck with lye or while wading ashore. If you
fall overboard, they're more easily removed than regular trousers.
If tied at the ends, the bell bottom legs can hold quite a lot of air
to be used as flotation devices.
These pants made a big hit in the 60's and 70's and are now
back among the young and rebellious. They might be smart for
us oldies but goodies, as well.
