All automatic transmission cars have flexplates. These thin discs of stamped steel perform a number of functions well out of proportion to their design complexity.
Location - The flexplate is bolted to the back of an engine's crankshaft and occupies the position that would be inhabited by the flywheel on a manual-transmission car.
Basic Function - A flexplate's primary job is to connect the transmission's torque converter to the engine's crankshaft.
Flex Function - A flexplate is so-called because the torque converter's outer metal shell tends to expand with heat under heavy operation. A solid, nonflexing disc would cause the torque converter to crack and fail.
Starter Ring - Flexplates have teeth on the outer ring and strongly resemble a large cog or gear. This starter motor engages this ring to turn the motor over while starting.

Това нещо още не е навлязло в бълг (и в руски).
Основната задача на маховика е да "обира" неравностите на въртенето и да осигурява кинетичен запас за работните ходове (при 4-цил мотори 1 цил работи, другите 3 поглъщат енергия).
Авт. скоростни кутии имаха маховици и авт. амбриажи, копирани от ръчните.
Това е вече нова технология и маховикът е отписан (не е ясно дали е отживял.
Доколкото ми стана ясно, това е плосък елемент (плоча), но сигурно е нагънат (за топлинното разширение и олекотяване), така че по-скоро е мембрана.
