Издигането на дълбоководни води в шелфовата зона близо до бреговете, или така наречения ъпуелинг (upwelling), е едно от най-интересните явления в океаните и моретата.

Това е и обяснението на неприятното за плувците явление "ъпуелинг", което изкарва на повърхността по-студените и солени слоеве от водните маси от дъното.
