CONTEXT: The observation of the scores of cells in the medium pointed to mutations causing explosive growth.

Since it doesn't seem to refer to a specific score (like the Gleason score, for example), I think it means "scores" in the sense of "great amount" of something. Especially if we take into account the "explosive growth" bit.
