The first article, “Ah! Barcelona…,” did not appear until two months after the events, and only after encouragement by Bishop Torras i Bages, whose own pastoral on the source of the troubles prompted Maragall—unconvinced by the bishop’s good-versus-evil reading of the facts—to write a letter to the bishop in which he stated that although there was surely more to it than that, Maragall would write nothing about it for fear it might displease the bishop.
El primer article, “Ah! Barcelona…”, no va aparèixer fins dos mesos després dels esdeveniments, i només després que l’animés a fer-ho el bisbe Torras i Bages, la pastoral del qual sobre les arrels dels problemes va impulsar Maragall—gens convençut de la lectura del bé contra el mal dels esdeveniments—a escriure una carta al bisbe en què declarava que, encara que segurament hi havia més motius que aquest, Maragall no n’escriuria res per por de contrariar al bisbe.

No sé si la traducció és perfecta, però espero que com a mínim t'ajudi a entendre millor el significat de l'expressió.
Jo diria que la idea és que el bisbe feia una anàlisi molt simplista dels fets i Maragall li deia que, tot i que ell no ho veia de manera tan categòrica, no n'escriuria res per no fer-lo enfadar (per cert, contrariar és transitiu, per tant, hauries d'escriure "contrariar el bisbe").
