See the link below for an explanation of the first step in a bookkeeping or accounting procedure: creation of a simple (one debit vs one credit) journal entry or a complex (a one debit vs many credits entry or vice versa, or many to many) journal entry. From the source documents, debit and credit amounts are entered into journals. This is of course what appears only in theory nowadays. Many modern accounting systems only requires you to create a source document. Journals, posting to the general and subsidiary ledgers, trial balance, and financial statements are automatic.
