Zhi1shi fen4zi 知识分子(intellectuals) or mu4shi 牧师 (clergy)

Explanation:
Having checked the Miriam-Webster Dictionary online, I believe I have come up with the best alternative. My translation means "Intellectuals or Intelligentsia". Although the meaning is derived from the word clergy.

ren de shen fen   ō  =class of people(can you read this)

Explanation:
  ō  =class of people

"shen(1) fen(4)" means "status" or "class", which have the same meaning in Chinese. "shenfen zheng" would mean identification document (as in passport)
This is a general translation applicable to both in PRC or in Taiwan. It is translation that is close to target language.

The previous two definitions are very specific to the intelligencia (as opposed to the Proletariate class) in Communist term). Nowhere is "intelligent" or "intelligencia" mentioned in "class of people"
