It is a research and advisory company providing country, industry and management analysis worldwide and incorporates the former Business International Corporation, a US company acquired by the parent organization in 1986. It is particularly well known for its country profiles and industry reports. In 2005, another entity, Economist Conferences, was merged with EIU.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, NA, Incorporated ("EIU") 是美國一家信息及咨询公司。Here I understand "intelligence" as "wisdom"，"unit" as "組織"。"economist" could be anyone who is related to the economy, so "經濟人" is better than "经济学人".

neutral  Jiang Yu: 信息研究所是个不错的译名，但我认为"the Economist“一定要翻成经济学人或经济学家，因为"the Economist“作为一本著名的经济杂志，其译名”经济学人"或“经济学家”已经被人广为接受了。所以属于同一 group 的 EIU 是肯定也要用这一名号的。
