English term or phrase: that called
While Pasley passed on 802.11a and 802.11g, he made an exception when it came to 802.11i, a security-related wireless LAN standard that he says couldn't come fast enough because of serious deficiencies with existing encryption standards. In this case, the Wi-Fi Alliance jumped the gun, releasing part of 802.11i nearly a year in advance of the final IEEE specification. "We didn't want the market to stand still until 802.11i was done," says Frank Hanzlik, managing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance. "But some pieces of 802.11i were already done, so we developed a certification program around a subset of that called Wi-Fi Protected Access. Says Pasley, "We and the industry knew that it was needed."
