Thanks a lot everyone... I consulted the English speakers at "monolingual", and it seems I'd better keep the meaning "general" here... I agree with Weiping and Ray's suggestions actually, but given the contexts it would be hard to fit the smae ideas in. Thanks to xuhuanyu too! One english alternative for "grinding pain" is "sharp burning pain"... cheers

The joints become progressively degenerated. The running and grinding friction during movements between the bones causes further inflammation and pains at the joints.
