Pošto je orginalni termin vezan uz urbanizam kod nas je uobičajeno koristiti za neko područje termin "zona". Pošto ne postoji ekvivalent u hrvatskom prostornom planiranju preporučujem poludoslovni prijevod "smeđe zone" ili pak opisni prema definiciji iz dole navedenog linka

na službenim stranicama ministarstva ne prevode, ali bih predložila ili 'smeđa polja' za razliku od 'zelenih polja' ili u navodne znakove, pa ostaviti 'brownfields'
