| English term or phrase: candidate vaccine | | As recent epidemiological data show that the incidence of dengue fever is accelerating, the candidate vaccine from Sanofi Pasteur, the sanofi-aventis vaccines division, is embarking on a new clinical study in Brazil. Dengue fever (formerly called tropical flu) has been known for over two centuries but has been making a comeback since the 1960s, and most recently a marked increase in cases – although there is still no treatment or vaccine. This growth is both quantitative, covering 124 affected countries in 2010, and qualitative, with shorter and more acute epidemic cycles. In 2009, 220 million people were infected with dengue fever, 2 million were hospitalized and 21,000 people died of the disease. 90% of those affected in the severest cases, were children. |
