Budući je gastroezofagealni refluks vrlo čest, može jednostavno postojati kao uzputno stanje bez uzročne povezanosti s ostalim smentnjama pacijenta.
Zbog velikog broja simptoma koji se pripisuju GERBu, (Gastroezofagealna refluksna bolest) postoje znatna neslaganja oko definicije bolesti. Refluks je naziv za vraćanje natrag, obrnuti tijek; kod ove bolesti označuje vraćanje želučane kiseline natrag u jednjak. Produženo izlaganje kiselini u jednjaku uzrokuje oštećenje tkiva. Kiselina može ući u grkljan i oštetiti glasnice, može biti udahnuta u pluća 9 aspiracija) te uzrokovati njihovu upalu.
