Many, understandably, have assumed that psychological control is the polar opposite of autonomy granting or autonomy support (see Barber et al., 2002 for a fuller treatment of this issue), with some actually measuring psychological control and reverse coding it to purportedly measure autonomy granting/support. This is inappropriate, not just because most indexes do not actually assess a range between psychological control and autonomy support, but rather measure the degree or frequency of one or the other. |
