Původní význam pochází z hudebního průmyslu, kde fenomén WHITE LABEL značí 12“ vinylovou desku zabalenou do jednoduché nepotištěné obálky, obvykle jen s vytištěný katalogovým číslem, názvem alba, interpreta a dobou hraní.
Tato nahrávka je vydána jen v malém nákladu. Tento způsob vydávání si na začátku devadesátých let kvůli nedostatku finančních prostředků pro vydání plnohodnotného alba oblíbili především hip-hopoví a houseoví DJs. Tak, aby se alespoň tímto způsobem dostala deska na pulty prodejců.
V přeneseném slova smyslu je WHITE LABEL produkt nebo služba, jež je nabízena ostatním firmám, prodejcům, aby ho mohli distribuovat pod svým obchodním jménem.
