Definition from New Mexico State University:
A harvest and regeneration technique removing all the trees (regardless of size) on an area. Clearcutting is commonly used with shade-intolerant species such as Douglas fir or lodgepole pine, which require full sunlight to reproduce and grow well. Clearcutting produces an even-aged stand of trees.

Eenvoudigste kapwijze om opgaand bos in een volgende generatie bos over te laten gaan.
Na bereiken van de beoogde omvang worden de bomen voor de voet geveld; de stammen worden afgevoerd, de takken verhakseld of op rillen geschoven. Op de ontstane kapvlakte (1 à 1,5 ha) werden de jonge boompjes voor het nieuwe bos aangeplant. Men spreekt dan van kunstmatige bosverjonging.
