Volgens mij wordt hier ´het inspecteren/controleren/nakijken´ van de machine bedoeld.

Kan me de verwarring voorstellen, maar dit is een gewone uitdrukking in het Engels. Dit kan je bijvoorbeeld ook met mensen doen, maar dan betekent het iets als 'uithoren'.

Je kunt ook op "sound out" (zonder streepje) zoeken.

Asker: ik was dit ook aan het denken; misschien gaat het specifiek om een geluidsinspectie van de machine

Asker: Bedankt voor je hulp. In mijn geval heeft het wel met geluid te maken. Heb even in hun andere publicaties gezocht en na dezelfde "sound-out"-zin stond deze uitleg: "During acceleration to the low speed hold point, listen for audible sounds of internal rubbing." Ook in de NL vertaling (die ik aan het proofreaden ben) stond "sound-out", maar dat leek me nogal lui :-)

Asker: de NL vertaling verwarde me, ook omdat de term beklemtoond werd met de aanhalingstekens, alsof het iets speciaal was.

Ik begrijp dat het inderdaad gaat om het beluisteren van de machine. De aanhalingstekens (als die inderdaad in de brontekst voorkomen) dienen wellicht om de aandact te vestigen op het gebruik van de in deze context vrij bijzondere term en om verwarring met de normale betekenis van 'sounding' (zie hieronder) te voorkomen.
