Reference information: In draaiende trommeldrogers (afb. 1) wordt het te drogen materiaal getransporteerd middels gelei-
deschoepen in de trommel. In oudere trommel- drogers wordt het transport vaak door de zwaar- tekracht geholpen door ze licht hellend op te stel- len. Moderne uitvoeringen (zoals de Mozer trom- meldrogers van Allgaier) worden vrijwel uitsluitend horizontaal opgesteld. Hefschoepen nemen het vochtige materiaal van de bodem van de trommel op en laten dit vervolgens weer val- len, waardoor het materiaal intensief in contact komt met de hete drooglucht. Een wezenlijke fac- tor voor de effectieve benutting van de verwar- mingsenergie is de vormgeving van de geleide- en hefschoepen. Meestal beweegt het te drogen ma- teriaal in de stromingsrichting van de drooglucht. Soms wordt gebruik gemaakt van het tegen- stroomprincipe, vooral bij hoge temperatuur-toe- passingen (bijv. in de asfaltindustrie en bij calci- nering).

An example of a rotating drum with lifting flights is shown in Figure 1. Features of a drum can vary greatly. Drums, which may be horizontal or inclined up to 5 degrees, rotate at relatively low speeds, usually between 3 and 8 rpm. Indus- trial drums vary in size from 0.3 m diameter by 2 m long to 7 m diameter by 90 m long. The gas flow may be cocur- rent or countercurrent to the solids flow. Drums with cocur- rent flow may be either horizontal or inclined, while drums with countercurrent flow are invariably inclined. In an inclined drum, the solids are fed to the high end and are dis- charged at the low end. Inside the drum are a number of flights, spaced about the circumference and extending along the length of the drum. As the drum rotates, the flights lift and cascade the particles into the gas stream. The cascading particles form sheets or curtains which traverse the drum below the flights. Flight shape and number can vary greatly.
