English to Dutch translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - IT (Information Technology) / chips/Linux
English term or phrase: chips/Linux-related sentence
In the case of Linux, the work required to develop all these drivers is already done. Many chipmakers do a reference port of their chips and create the software for integrating those chips to standard embedded Linux.

My question: what is "reference porting" and are the chips integrated INTO Linux? I don't think the last bit of the sentence is entirely grammatical...

Explanation:
'porting' (also used in Dutch) is the process of adapting / transferring software from one platform (hardware / architecture / operating system) to another on a low code level (hence 'integration'); in this case I think that chip makers, as a sort of proof of principle ('reference'), port the drivers for their chips to the Linux platform so software developers can use them directly with Linux

agree  Jan Willem van Dormolen: Slight modification: AIUI a 'reference driver' is not a 'proof of principle', but a basic, standard driver, that other companies/developers may use as reference when they develop more sophisticated software.
