Explanation: Hi Astrid, I see no-one has answered this one! My husbands says the cat's pyijama's is a well-known expression from the roarin' twenties. However, it has not been in use very much since. it means 'cool'. It's funny that Bob should say that as he did not see this message and I did not mention it to him either. So, it is 'cool' alright. I suspect that this girl made the link between the 'cool cat 'and 'cat's nightdress' as she could not think of the correct 'cat pyijama's'. Now we are this far, but what to do about some catchy proper Dutch that in addition will fit into your 22-space line??? But I gave it my best shot. It was fun to do too!

Explanation: Part of the joke (it seems to me) is first that the girl is obsessed with cats, and second that she seems to think that the word pyjama is offensive, and therefore she says nightdress. I wouldn't know a way to express these elements in Dutch. A more simple 'pun' would be to have her say: Laten we naar een tent gaan die het neusje van de kat is! Reply: Je bedoelt de zalm? This expresses her obsession with cats and the meaning of 'the cat's pyjama's. Good luck! (other answers) |
