My research concerns the refinement of a cognitive theory of hope. I define hope as a thinking process in which the person perceives that s/he can: (1) conceptualize goals; (2) produce the routes to these goals (pathways thinking), and; (3) initiate and sustain movement along those pathways (agency thinking). Topics pursued have been the developmental antecedents of hope, measuring hope in children and adults, how hope operates in psychotherapy, how to increase hope—especially for persons who are low in it, the role of hope in sports, its relationship to health and coping, issues of attachment and hope in children and adolescents, spirituality and meaning in life as related to hope, hope and depression, how hope operates in reality negotiation and the maintenance of the self-concept, hope in work and business settings, and, perhaps most importantly, how hope can be used to help students from grade school through college. |

In this regard, there’s an old maxim: “Having the will and the way.” This latter phrase captures the essence of how I conceptualize hopeful thinking."
Op grond van die omschrijving interpreteer ik zijn 'agency thinking' als 'motivatie tot doelgericht handelen' of 'doelgerichte motivatie tot handelen'. In jouw stuk hierboven lijkt de nadruk meer te liggen op het geloof in eigen vermogen tot doelgericht handelen - wat weer in de buurt van zelfeffectiviteit (self-efficacy) komt. In dat geval zou ik "pathways thinking" vertalen met iets als 'doelgericht denken' en "agency thinking" met iets als 'vermogen tot (doelgericht) handelen'. Het doelgerichte zit natuurlijk niet letterlijk in het "agency thinking", maar de context verwijst er wel duidelijk naar.

Woordenboek van de Psychologie [Reber]: agens [Latijn, letterlijk handelend, werkend. Globaal genomen: alles wat een effect heeft. Dit 'wat' kan variëren van een chemische substantie, een kracht, tot een persoon, een groep van personen, enzovoort.
Ik ben een techneut, geen psycholoog, maar op basis van deze definitie en de onderstaande link denk ik dat je hier misschien iets mee zou kunnen doen. Voor agens op zich zijn in de context van pschologie vrij veel googles te vinden, maar voor agensmatig denken niet. Het is in ieder geval een vrij compacte, niet-omschrijvende vertaling. Succes!
