op het punt van stoppen

Explanation:
'aan het einde van zijn loopbaan' is mogelijk, als je zeker weet dat de man stopt vanwege pensionering. Maar misschien stopt hij wel omdat hij de veertig nadert en denkt dat hij de voeling met de doelgroep begint te missen en nu een andere baan gaat zoeken.
'op zijn retour' lijkt me een tikkie negatief...
