English term or phrase: ski cants
Text states trail maps are also useful because they make great impromptu ski cants. I can't seem to figure out what ski cants actually are.

Explanation:
"Ski cants" are literally the angles at which the skis are set/adjusted relative to your knee. They always deviate from the perpendicular to some degree, so the author is being very figurative here using "ski cant" to refer to deviating from the normal (i.e. the 90 degree upright position)... or "deviating from the normal path". Elusive writing in my opinion.
