Tom Brown's Schooldays
The Brown’s were a fighting family. They lived in the valley of the White Horse in England. The name of the house is Kingston Lisle. Mr Brown was a farmer and a Justice of the peace. His son Tom had a nurse called Charity Lamb. Tom was always fighting with the nurse.
Tom had two friends named Noah and Benjamin. Noah was ninety years and Benjamin was seventy years old.
Benjamin taught Tom how to fish in the little stream and also taught he Tom how to ride on a horse. Benjamin was as a young man a very good wrestler.
Tom had one young friend called Harry Winburn. He played with Tom after doing lessons with a lady in his own home.
Tom went to a Public School named Rugby School. He met at the school East and they dinner together in the school. In the afternoon the Schoolhouse played against the rest of the school. The headmaster, Dr Arnold, looked at the game.
Each new boy was made to stood on the table and sing a song. Old Brooke. After that, Old Brook, the captain of the schoolhouse, said that he left the school. He had been in the school for eight years. In the evening twelve boys tossed Tom and East in a blanket and they hit the ceiling. Next morning they had pain and they had the first sermon.
Tom must do fagging that was ruled bij two big boys, Walker and Brooke. On that evening they played the game ‘Hare and Hounds’. But in that game Tom and East lost their way. They reached Rugby School about 40 minutes after the gates were locked. A few days later it was his first term at Rugby School and go to his home.
At the beginning of the next term Tom was in the lower fourth form. There were now new prepostors (older boys) because two big boys have left the school. Now the big fifth form boys began to fag the small boys. Tom had decided not to fag for any boy who isn’t in the sixth. Flashman want that Tom fag him but Tom won’t that. Diggs came sometimes by Tom and East to defend them to Flashman.
Next morning all the boys paid their shillings into a Derby (horse race) lottery. On Tom’s paper is written the horse HARKAWAY and that horse is the favourite. Tom won’t sell it but Flashman said: You sell it or we’ll roast you. When they Tom struck and hold him in front of the fire Tom’s head is white and he seemed like dead. East brought some water and it seemed better with Tom. Tom went to the sickroom and two days later he came back. When Tom and East were sitting in the Hall, they saw Flashman again. He struck Tom and Tom and East were fighting back.
In the river Avon near the school, bath there under the bridge the fifth and the sixth forms. There was also a fight between keepers and the boys.
Three weeks later Tom and East were at a fair, but that may not. A master saw it and they must go to Dr Arnold. He beat them. At home they must think about what they have done.
On the first evening of the term Tom ran to the matron’s room of Mrs Wicks. She sent him to his room. Next to him in No 4 there sleep a new boy Arthur. He agreed with everything Tom said. That made him angry.
Arthur found a friend Martin called Madmen. He mixed powders. One day Dr Arnold came to his room and the powders exploded.
The next morning Martin, Arthur, East and Tom set out towards Caldecott Woods to found birds nesting and picked up the eggs. Martin had a collection eggs and want more eggs. Martin put the eggs out the tree and he came down and he feld on his back. Later, they killed by a farmer a duck and put it in a study where it was found by the matron.
On the end of the term they were reading a book in the lesson. After the lesson there was a fight between Williams and Tom. Young Brooke had to stopped the fight, because Dr Arnold said that. The next day Tom must shook his hand with Williams. Young Brooke has said that to Tom.
Two years later Arthur is in the sixth form. Tom and East in the fifth form. In different houses, several boys has a seriously ill. Arthur had also a seriously ill. He was near the dead. Arthur was lying in a sofa and Tom and Arthurs mother were by Arthur. At ten o’clock Tom went to his study.
Next morning they told about cribs. Tom used a scrib by his lessons but it may not.
Today was a match between Rugby School against Marylebone. Marylebone had won the match. The next morning at eight o’clock Tom was in the train to London. Now he was no longer a schoolboy.
In July, 1842, he was fishing with two friends in Scotland, he read in a old newspaper that Arnold was dead. Tom went to the Rugby school and saw where Arnold is buried.
