Heb uitvoerig gezocht en in Engelstalige boeken verschillende plaatjes van box-lock pistols gevonden, maar nergens een vertaling van dit begrip. Misschien dat de vertaling van 'box
lock' 'kastslot' is, dit is het enige woord dat ik heb gevonden waarvan ik me kan voorstellen dat het dat kan zijn. Maar nogmaals: overtuigend 'bewijs' heb ik daarvoor niet gevonden.

(Het boek speelt in 1872 in Londen.) Ik vermoed dat dit zoveel
wil zeggen als 'colourful language' en dat de auteur misschien
bij wijze van grapje de kleur van tuppence gebruikt. Maar hoe leest een native speaker dit zinnetje, vraag ik mij af, en heeft iemand dit wellicht toch eerder gehoord?

Explanation:
box is ook foedraal/beschermhoes. Waarschijnlijk kon deze goed worden afgesloten zodat iemand ander je wapen er niet uit kon graaien en het er bij een storm niet uitviel.

Ik heb die \"site van Sven\" bekeken, en vermoed dat het box-lock pistol daar inderdaad wordt beschreven. Ik zou het onvertaald laten en een korte toelichting geven: box-lock pistol (speciaal vuurwapen zonder hamer)

Explanation:
Hoe relevant is het dat het specifiek om een "box-lock" pistol gaat? De gemiddelde lezer weet toch niet wat het is. Het klinkt gewoon ouderwets. Dus als je vertaling ook een beetje ouderwets klinkt en een beetje in de buurt zit van het begrip pistool, zit je goed.

Just found on a German site that Kastenschloßpistole is the German for box lock pistol, so there's a chance that kastslotpistool is right...
