Dutch translation: ineen stuk / in stukken loskomen

English term or phrase: see sentence below
Context = silicone sealant (siliconenafdichting)
I do not quite get the idea of the following sentence:

"If the sealant does not tear within itself (cohesively) when the stick is pulled out (sealant is still semi-liquid and stringy, the sealant has not snapped. The time at which the partially-cured sealant tears cohesively when the stick is pulled out is termed the "snap time"."

ESPECIALLY THE MEANING OF 'tear within itself' and 'tear cohesively'

Many thanks to anyone who can help me.

Dutch translation:ineen stuk / in stukken loskomen
Explanation:
"tear cohesively" betekend dat het in een stuk loskomt, "tear in itself" betekend, dat het dat niet doet, maar zelf ook scheurt en dus in stukjes loskomt - een mooiere vertaling hiervoor weet ik jammer genoeg niet. HTH, Eva
