English term or phrase: sprinkling
We suggest you begin with the sprinkling of tiny gems properly known as the Society Islands.
The language is French and of course, English is spoken...

no further context refering the sprinkling...

verspreide
Explanation:
Ik zou kiezen voor ...het handjevol verspreide juweeltjes, bekend als de Genootschapseilanden.

'The sprinkling' als zelfstandig naamwoord betekent niet alleen 'strooien' maar in ruimere zin 'scattered' of verspreid.

sprin·kling
[spring-kling] Show IPA
–noun
1.
a small quantity or number scattered here and there.
2.
a small quantity sprinkled or to be sprinkled.

In Barend's suggestie zou ik 'in werkelijkheid' vermijden, maar gewoon zeggen 'bekend als'. Anders wordt het, mij althans, TE sprookjesachtig.

handjevol uitgestrooide

Explanation:
interesting
I once translated this sentence :-)
And this is about what I came up with:

We suggest you begin with the sprinkling of tiny gems properly known as the Society Islands

Wij stellen voor dat u begint met dat handjevol uitgestrooide juweeltjes die in werkelijkheid de Genootschapseilanden worden genoemd
