Explanation:
Als ik vergelijk met de andere genoemde werkzaamheden, lijkt me het opruimen van de machinekamer niet in dezelfde orde van grootte/belangrijkheid te zijn als de rest.

Explanation:
Een 'wiper' is een zg. handlanger, een poetser van de machinekamer. 'Wiping' kun je hier best zo vertalen, denk ik.

Ja, inderdaad te kort door de bocht... Waarschijnlijk heb je meer aan deze definitie:
The process of reducing the amount of permanent magnetism in a naval vessel by placing a single coil horizontally around the vessel and moving it, while energized, up and down along the sides of the vessel.

In die zin dus een vorm van 'degaussing' of demagnetisering.

Asker: Hartelijk dank voor je suggestie maar ik denk niet dat ze dit bedoelen. Waarom zouden ze een commercieel transport onderbreken voor een (niet noodzakelijke?) schoonmaakbeurt van de machinekamer?
