English term or phrase:dilution space
• Dilution method
The dilution method is used to calculate the total mass of a solvent containing a labelled substance by
administering a known amount of the labelled substance and measuring the density at equilibrium.
Heavy water (D2O) is generally used as the labelled substance to measure total body water (TBW). TBW can
be calculated because the TBW is considered as __dilution space__ for heavy water. Sodium bromide (NaBr) has been used as the labelled substance in the method to calculate ECW. It is known that bromine (Br) is not contained in cells, and is diluted in the ECW.
Explanation: There seems not to be any direct equivalent for 'dilution space' in Finnish. Some functional translation may be used. E.g. the passage "TBW can be calculated because the TBW is considered as __dilution space__ for heavy water" can be translated as "TBW voidaan laskea raskasveden pitoisuuden laimentuman perusteella".
I would also consider using a neologism "laimentumatilavuus" in Finnish. In it's first appearance I would, of course, add the English original in parenthesis as explanation (eng. "dilution space").

was calculated as the ratio between the weight of the injected D20 and its predicted concentration at zero time.
After the last bleeding ewes were sheared and slaughtered and the body water, fat, protein, ash and energy
