Explanation:
"hold" n'est pas seul mais fait partie de l'expression verbale "hold harmless" plus loin dans la phrase.
Formule juridique usuelle.

It's actually "hold Z harmless", where Z is "XXX, ... and assigns". See, for example, the quoted kudoz reply. Do a Kudoz search for "hold harmless"
