English term or phrase: Footnote

In a medical translation (advertising for a drug), in the margin appears a series of words, preceding the sentence to translate. Obviously they are specifications for the printing stage of this paper. Being overall a physician, I'm not used to this terminology. Can you help me ? Thanks in advance

Note en bas de page ou note de pied. Ces 2 versions m'ont été confirmées. Que ceux qui ont proposé "note de bas de page" se rassurent, moi aussi je croyais que c'était le bon terme. Eh ben, non !C'est "en" et pas "de" qui est le terme consacré. Merci à tous.

Why simply "renvoi"? Because, despite their name, footnotes are not always placed at the bottom of the page. Sometimes they're at the end of the chapter or the book.
