"Examination of the bearings found indications of spalling fatigue, the typical failure mode of predominantly rolling contact surfaces. The initial stage of surface fatigue occurs as a result of plastic deformation. Rolling interaction of the asperities on opposing surfaces causes progressive cold working of the surfaces resulting in a burnished or glazed appearance."
