voici le contexte:
Before steam power, threshing machines were operated by men and animals on treadmills, but as steam use developed in the 1800s, so did the familiar box-like machines, with their flywheels and belts.

Explanation: Hello, when I read your sentence, I have the feeling that "box-like machine" is not the name of a particular machine, but really a comparaison will a box. What I mean is that today, threshing machines are massive and look like big boxes, whereas before, when steam was not developped, threshing machines were operated by human and were far more smaller.
If I am right, you could say "machine massive" "énorme machine" "machine imposante" etc
