mortalité brutale
Explanation:
I didn't find anywhere anything near "crash floraison"; I don't think 'bloom' here means floraison rather spreading around or so (like prolifération). The phenomenon is well known as such in the e.g. ecological literature.
You might want to put the english and/or the latin term in brackets. Good luck!

Note to reference poster
Asker: Thank you very much: "mortalité brutale" (I had thought of the less scientific "morte subite"!) sounds exactly the thing (please propose it for points?!). Do you think I can (need) bracket the alternative buzzword tag "crash floraison"?
