'tarière' is not the only French word for 'auger'

I believe, in fact, that this term only applies to the kind of 'auger' used for making holes.

But here, I think your context is probably talking about the Archimedes' screw type auger used, for example in conveyor systems; in which case, 'tarière' is not the right word; a quick check in the archives here will reveal other solutions, but from memory, I believe the term generally found is in fact 'vis sans fin'
