In his description of a gender system, Greenberg exposes a "fundamental contrast" between animates and inanimates, humans and non-humans, and males and females. Due to the obligatory nature of the system, these contrasts create markedness oppositions: an asymmetrical and hierarchical relationship where one term in an opposition is viewed as containing a mark, and the other as not containing the same mark. Within this relationship, the marked term is generally more constrained than the unmarked term, specifying information that the unmarked term does not, and as a consequence, often occurring less frequently. In French (a binary system), the masculine gender represents the unmarked term in most cases. Thus, NOMINALIZATIONS OF VERBS or adjectives within the language are masculine, as are the majority of compounds (particularly those with a verbal stem…). Additionally, borrowings from other languages are generally masculine…;
